Trailer... what?
What is a trailer?
Any vehicle intended to be propelled by another vehicle is a trailer.
Light or heavy trailer?
A light trailer
- is a trailer or semi-trailer that does not exceed the maximum permissible mass of 750 kg and that is towed exclusively by a passenger car, a dual-purpose vehicle, a minibus, an ambulance, a motorcycle, a light truck, a camper van, a bus or a coach.
- is covered by the BA insurance (Third Party Liability) of your towing vehicle. Please inform your insurer that you will be towing a trailer. This information will appear on your green insurance card.
A heavy trailer
- has a maximum permissible mass that is higher than 750 kg
- has brakes
- requires separate insurance (based on chassis number or license plate) and has an insurance document
- must be registered with the Vehicle Registration Service (DIV) and will receive a separate number plate starting with the letter Q or U
- must be submitted for the technical inspection
- must pay annual road tax
What is the difference with a semi-trailer?
A trailer, also called a 'semi-trailer', is a remork without its own front axle, which can be coupled to a towing unit. This connection is made by means of a 'kingpin' that is placed on the fifth wheel.
